Please give your new Board of Directors your full support in the upcoming year, as well as your input and opinions on what you would like to see ECAHS accomplish.

At the Think Tank meeting in October, Cathy Aul graciously volunteered to chair the Youth Committee and to assist with articles and activities for the Crabbet Kids section of this newsletter. Her first contribution appears in this issue. Many thanks go to Cathy for her willingness to work on this project. If you have suggestions for the Youth Program, please contact Cathy or me. Your input will be greatly welcomed.

            President’s Corner:

Hello Everyone –

When the deadline arrived for last month’s notes, I did not have the complete Dressage Show results for CC XII. Mike Whitaker gave me a copy, as he received the results to put on the ECAHS website (www.ecahs.org).

Thirteen year old Megan Kelsall, on her Introductory Level Test A dressage ride scored very well. She rode her grandmother’s, Virginia Kelsall’s, horse AM Kings Ransom. This was his first dressage show. Kings Ransom was also shown in hand by Megan (her first time showing in hand) to the second highest scoring horse of the Celebration XII show, garnering him a silver medal.

Misty Bosarge had two entries in the dressage show and scored well on both of her geldings in the Training Level Test 3. Her older veteran gelding, Maagic Zarose scored 78.33, which was the high score of the day. Her junior gelding, Amyr My Rissalix scored 75.00. Misty was the high point junior dressage exhibitor.

Joy Evans showed her horse El Kazah Amir in the Training Level Test 2 to a 71.50 score and in the Training Level Test 4 to a 75.00 score. Joy was the high point senior dressage exhibitor.

Jacqueline Smith showed Budari in Training Level Test 2 for a 69.00 score and in Training Level Test 4 to a 65.00 score.

Other exhibitors rode in the instructional part of the dressage program but did not show back to ride a test. The riders unanimously agreed that the dressage judge, Linnea Seaman, was wonderful in the instructions she gave in the Ride-A-Test and for her ability as a teacher/judge.

Hopefully, we can have an equally successful dressage show next year at Wakefield. I know in past years, Marie Taylor has worked very hard at the Wakefield site to produce top-notch dressage programs for us!

I have had feedback from good many members requesting less show and more separately scheduled educational seminars/speakers/demonstrations as in earlier Celebrations, these to be held when there is no show or preparation for the show. How much more expense such a schedule would entail, and the feasibility of getting “donor” participants to present the programs will need some investigation and approval from the Board of Directors of ECAHS. Financially, the show fees and stall rentals do help pay the freight to put on a Celebration and I feel we cannot add any more to the cost to exhibitors. We should seek other ideas for raising revenues. Some members also expressed they want more camaraderie and less competition in our Celebrations, showing what our Crabbet Arabians can do in demonstrations rather than show competitions. There is a wide span in these approaches and will require a close look at what is feasible. A compromise will be needed as no one plan for the CC can please everyone! The Board will do our best for you.

These ideas and input from the membership is appreciated and I hope you will keep them coming. A president’s letter will go out soon with topics for your consideration. Please respond ASAP.

            Till next time,

***CORRECTION***

In the October Issue of the Newsletter, the article on Randolph Huntington was erroneously attributed to Merrie Boone. The author of that article was, in fact, Michael Bowling. We apologize for the error.

A much belated but heartily appreciated THANKYOU to all those who manned the booth and assisted with the “Chinese Auction” at the Crabbet Celebration XII show. Our youth “runners” this year did a very good job with getting the “prizes” to the winners. Also, the “prize” ticketeers” did a wonderful job staying up with me as we announced and distributed the auction items to the winners. Again, many thanks!

Think Tank Meeting

October 8th

Highlights

Moderator Michael Flynn opened the meeting by explaining who he was and his background both with horses and mediation.  He then asked Dr. Stoneback to lead the meeting following the agenda that Dr. Stoneback had prepared prior to the meeting.  Several key issues were discussed including:

Agendas for Board Meetings:

Mr. Flynn pointed out that in most groups the agenda for a meeting is set by board members telling the President (who actually prepares the agenda) what they want to be presented or discussed at the meeting.  If members of ECAHS have issues that they would like the Board to discuss they need to contact a board member with their concerns/suggestions and then the board member must contact the President to let him/her know that the topic needs to be added to the agenda.  The agenda set by the President would then be given to the Secretary to distribute prior to the meeting to both the Board of Directors and membership.

There was a question of contacting specific board members on certain issues and Mr. Flynn suggested that with ECAHS's current structure contacting any director should be fine.  It was also suggested that the agenda be posted on the website and Mike Whitaker said that this should not be a problem as long as he had the agenda sent to him.

Email versus US Postal Service:

How meeting notices are sent out was also discussed and Mr. Flynn suggested that using email notification and the Arabian News was not enough, that all members should be receiving notices of meetings in the mail.  This resulted in much discussion regarding the cost of such mailings, but going forward this will be standard practice as per the current ECAHS by-laws.

Mr. Flynn suggested that an Email Communication and/or Communication Committee should exist within ECAHS and that this committee set the guidelines for when and how notices on meetings and meeting minutes are disseminated to the members.

A suggestion was made that if possible a spot be added to the membership form asking people returning the forms if they would like to receive notifications from ECAHS via US mail or email.  Another suggestion was that if people wanted to receive information via US mail that they pay for the mailings in addition to their membership.  This proposal would need to be brought before the Board and voted on and the By-laws adjusted accordingly if it was decided to do this.

Committee Structure:

Mr. Flynn noted that there needs to be an updated committee listing that includes the members and chairs of each committees as there has not been an updated list in quite a while.  Lynn Blake asked if such a list could be posted on the website so members would know what the committees are and who they should contact if they have a question that pertains to a certain committee.  Mike Whitaker said that he would be able to do this once the list has been completed and sent to him.

Pat Bobb added that she felt that committee work should not be done at the board level but that the committees should have the autonomy to do their work on their own and then report back to the board.  John Bobb added that the President and Board should not interfere with the work of the committees and this happens too often within ECAHS.

By-laws Committee:

Dr. Stoneback has established a By-laws committee consisting of himself, Cathy Bradley-Aul and Marion Ullrich to review the current By-laws.  Members who have suggestions for By-Laws updates or changes are encouraged to copy any of the committee members.

Celebration:

A discussion on whether there should be less emphasis on the show part of the Celebration in favor of more educational programs did not yield any decision one way or another.  Options such as having only futurity classes at the Celebration or only having classes on one day with seminars on the other day were discussed as well as having seminars separate from the Celebration.  Also discussed was the raising of the minimum Crabbet percentage to participate in the Celebration.  There will be an analysis done of the percentages of the horses who have participated in the Celebration over the last several years to see if raising the percentage requirement would exclude a large number of potential entries or not.
